Karwar District Commissioner K. Lakshmipriya has instructed officials to take strict action against vehicles transporting goods beyond the permitted limit, stressing that overloaded vehicles pose a serious threat to road safety.

Chairing the District Road Safety Committee meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Karwar, she directed Regional Transport Office officials to carry out regular inspections on all major roads across the district instead of concentrating on a few locations.

She said cases should be registered immediately against vehicles found carrying excess loads. The District Commissioner also asked officials to closely monitor private buses to ensure they are not transporting commercial goods other than passengers’ luggage. She further directed transport authorities to ensure that all long distance buses operate with two drivers as required.

Highlighting safety concerns near the Karwar flyover, where shops and residential areas are located, Lakshmipriya instructed the National Highways Authority to implement the required safety measures and complete the ongoing works according to prescribed guidelines without delay.

Referring to the recent increase in road accidents in the Kumta region, she called for the installation of streetlights, proper road markings, and cat’s eye reflectors at accident prone locations. She also directed officials to install No Parking boards and warning signs near waterfalls along highways, where tourists often stop their vehicles for photographs and videos, increasing the risk of accidents.

To improve safety in the ghat sections, she instructed officials to install signboards indicating the number of upcoming bends from the beginning of downhill stretches. She also called for information boards and reflective safety markers near all bridges to improve visibility during the night.

The District Commissioner further directed the concerned departments to install CCTV cameras at locations identified by the police, strengthen safety measures at accident prone black spots, and place speed limit signs and warning lights wherever required.

The meeting was attended by Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Dileesh Shashi, Superintendent of Police Deepan M. N., Sub Divisional Officer Shravan Kumar, and officials from the National Highways Authority, the Public Works Department, and other departments.
