After reminding you of your origin…

After showing how dead earth comes back to life with rain…

After proving that resurrection is not impossible for the One who created you the first time…

Surah Al-Hajj now turns toward something else.

Not the denial that comes from confusion.

But the denial that comes from arrogance.

Arguing Without Light

“And among mankind is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or an enlightening Book.”– Qur’an 22:8

Again

“Among mankind.”

Because this disease is not limited to a certain time or people.

There will always be those who speak about Religion confidently…

While possessing no real knowledge.

No understanding.

No guidance.

No light from revelation.

Only assumptions.

Only pride.

Only the need to feel intellectually above submission.

And notice something profound here –

Allah does not simply say they are unaware.

He says they argue.

Not searching sincerely for truth…

But debating to resist it.

Some people ask questions because they want clarity.

Others ask questions because they do not want to surrender.

And the difference between the two is humility.

The Pride That Pulls Hearts Away

“Twisting his neck in pride to mislead others from the path of Allah…” Qur’an 22:9

It is an image of arrogance.

A person turning away dismissively.

Rejecting truth before even letting it settle in the heart.

And often, arrogance does not remain personal.

It spreads.

One arrogant heart can shake others.

One careless voice can plant doubt.

One prideful soul can pull people away from guidance while thinking they are enlightened.

But then comes a warning.

“For him in this world is disgrace, and on the Day of Resurrection We will make him taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.” Qur’an 22:9

Arrogance may look powerful for a moment.

It may sound convincing.

It may gather attention and applause.

But anything that distances a person from Allah eventually humiliates the soul.

And then Allah says:

ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاكَ وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ

“That is because of what your own hands have sent forth, and Allah is never unjust to His servants.” Qur’an 22:10

Allah wrongs no one.

The tragedy is not that guidance was hidden.

The tragedy is that pride made the heart refuse it.

Because knowledge without humility does not guide.

Guidance is not merely about intelligence.

It is about a heart willing to bow.

Faith That Depends on Comfort

Then the Surah shifts suddenly…

From arrogance…

To fragility.

“And among mankind is he who worships Allah on an edge…” Qur’an 22:11

On an edge.

Not firmly grounded.

Not rooted deeply.

Just barely holding on.

As long as life feels easy…

Faith feels easy too.

As long as prayers are answered quickly…

As long as life goes according to plan…

As long as obedience does not demand too much…

They remain.

But then hardship comes.

A delayed dua.

A loss.

A test.

A heartbreak.

A situation they did not expect.

And suddenly, their relationship with Allah begins to shake.

“If good touches him, he is reassured by it. But if a trial strikes him, he turns back on his face…” Qur’an 22:11

This is fragile faith.

A faith connected to comfort –

Not conviction.

A faith built on outcomes –

Not trust.

And Allah describes the result of such a faith:

خَسِرَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةَ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ الْخُسْرَانُ الْمُبِينُ

“He loses this world and the Hereafter. That is the clear loss.”– Qur’an 22:11

Because a heart that abandons Allah in hardshipwill never truly find peace anywhere else.

But real faith is not proven when life is easy.

Real faith appears when things stop making sense…

Yet the heart still says:

Allah is wise.

Allah is merciful.

Allah has not abandoned me.

Because worship was never meant to be transactional.

Allah is not worthy of worship only when life feels beautiful.

He is worthy in ease and hardship alike.

The Illusion of Everything Besides Allah

The Surah then exposes another reality:

يَدْعُو مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لَا يَضُرُّهُ وَمَا لَا يَنفَعُهُ

“He calls upon besides Allah that which neither harms him nor benefits him…” Qur’an 22:12

How often do Human beings attach their hearts to things that cannot truly save them?

People.

Status.

Wealth.

Control.

Validation.

Plans.

We panic when they disappear…

As though they were our source of security all along.

And Allah says:

“That is the farthest misguidance.”– Qur’an 22:12

Because the farther the heart moves from Allah, the more lost it becomes

Even if the world calls it successful.

Then the Surah describes the false refuge people run toward:

يَدْعُو لَمَن ضَرُّهُ أَقْرَبُ مِن نَّفْعِهِ ۚ لَبِئْسَ الْمَوْلَىٰ وَلَبِئْسَ الْعَشِيرُ

“He calls upon one whose harm is closer than its benefit. What an evil protector and what an evil companion.”– Qur’an 22:13

Everything besides Allah is limited.

Fragile.Temporary.

Things people depend on can fail them overnight.

People they trusted can leave.

The world they built can collapse in a moment.

But Surah Al-Hajj keeps bringing the heart back to one truth:

Only Allah is constant.

A Reflection to Sit WithIn

Part 1, Allah shook your sense of stability with the reality of the Hour.

In Part 2, He reminded you that your very existence is proof of resurrection.

And now in Part 3, The Surah asks something deeper:

What is your faith actually built on?

Knowledge…or assumptions?

Humility…or pride?

Trust…or comfort?

Because a faith rooted only in easewill collapse the moment life becomes difficult.

But a heart truly connected to Allah remains steady – even when everything else shakes.
