Police said many parents hand over vehicles to their children out of affection, but this can put the child’s life and the lives of others at serious risk. They reminded the public that allowing a minor to drive is not only dangerous but also a punishable offence.

Under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, if a minor is caught driving, the parent, guardian or vehicle owner can face legal action. The punishment may include imprisonment of up to three years and a fine. The registration certificate of the vehicle can also be cancelled for one year.

The police also said that a minor caught driving may not be allowed to obtain a driving licence until the age of 25.

Authorities appealed to parents to act responsibly and avoid giving vehicle keys to children. Instead, they urged families to teach road safety, patience and respect for traffic rules until children become legally eligible to drive.
