Udupi Traffic Police to Launch AI-Powered Cameras for Strict Rule Enforcement
New intelligent system will automatically detect violations and send alerts directly to mobile phones.

Udupi: The Udupi Police Department is taking a major step towards better traffic management by introducing the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). This new initiative aims to enforce traffic rules strictly across the district using modern technology.
According to officials, 18 Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras will be installed at seven key locations in Udupi.
How the System Works District Superintendent of Police (SP) Hariram Shankar announced the plan while inspecting a newly installed traffic signal at Syndicate Circle in Manipal on Tuesday. He explained that the Udupi City Municipal Council has allocated Rs 50 lakh for this project.
Out of the seven planned locations, four cameras will be set up within the city limits, while three will be placed at other busy junctions in the district. Once the system is fully active, the AI cameras will automatically detect traffic violations. The system will then instantly send a fine alert or notice to the violator’s mobile phone.
Speed Control and Surveillance To improve safety on the National Highways, speed radar guns will be installed at six different points to catch overspeeding vehicles.
Additionally, under the ‘Saine Drishti’ project, the police are working with the Chamber of Commerce to install CCTV cameras at 200 locations. So far, work has been completed at 25 spots, and a central control room is being planned to monitor the footage.
Road and Signal Improvements New traffic signals are being installed at two junctions based on an earlier proposal. To manage weekend and festival crowds better, the police are also upgrading road infrastructure. This includes:
- Expanding free left-turn lanes.
- Removing old poles that block traffic.
- Painting new stop lines and zebra crossings.
Awareness Before Action The police emphasized that they will not start fining people immediately without warning. Continuous awareness campaigns will be held to educate the public about traffic rules and signal lights. However, SP Shankar warned that once the AI cameras are fully operational, penalties will be automatic for anyone breaking the rules.
City Municipal Commissioner Mahantesh Hangargi confirmed that signboards will also be placed at major junctions to help guide drivers.
