UAE Dirham Symbol Set to Appear on Phone Keyboards After Unicode Approval
New Unicode 18.0 standard gives the UAE currency symbol a digital code, paving the way for wider use on devices
The UAE dirham symbol could soon become available on smartphones, computers and other digital devices after receiving approval under the latest Unicode Standard.
Unicode 18.0 has assigned a dedicated code to the UAE dirham symbol, along with several other new currency symbols and emojis. The standard provides a universal coding system that allows characters, symbols and emojis to be recognised and displayed consistently across different digital platforms.
The UAE’s dirham symbol was officially approved by the Central Bank of the UAE in 2025. However, its wider digital adoption was limited because it did not previously have a standardised Unicode code.
The symbol was developed from the English name of the dirham and is intended to serve as an internationally recognisable representation of the UAE currency. Its design includes two horizontal lines, reflecting the stability of the dirham and drawing inspiration from the UAE flag.
The design also incorporates elements inspired by the UAE’s national identity and cultural heritage while following precise structural guidelines for consistent use.
UAE authorities have also issued guidelines covering the correct use of the symbol across physical and digital platforms.
With its inclusion in Unicode 18.0, the dirham symbol can now be integrated more easily into operating systems, applications, websites and digital keyboards as technology companies adopt the new Unicode version.
