Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday reacted to the defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill on women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha, calling it only the beginning of a larger political fight.

In his response, Stalin said that the outcome should be seen as “just a trailer,” indicating that more challenges to the Centre’s policies are likely in the future. His remarks come amid strong opposition from several regional parties to the proposed changes in the Bill.

The Bill, which aimed to introduce 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, failed to pass after it could not secure the required two thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.

Leaders from southern states, including Stalin, had expressed concerns over linking women’s reservation to a delimitation exercise based on older census data. Critics argued that such a move could affect the political representation of southern states.

Stalin’s statement adds to the growing chorus of opposition leaders who have welcomed the Bill’s defeat, framing it as a political and constitutional victory.

The development is expected to intensify the ongoing debate around women’s reservation and electoral reforms in the country.
