Early Life and Formative Years

Born on May 1, 1936, in Bhatkal—just eleven years before India gained independence—Ghani’s journey took an unexpected turn at age five when he moved to Madras (now Chennai) for medical treatment. He remained there with his father, Abu Muhammad Mohtesham Ibne M.A. Mohideen Sahib, who was established in the handloom trade.

Ghani’s leadership qualities surfaced early during his schooling at the Mohammedan High School. He eventually completed his Fellow of Arts (F.A.), a qualification equivalent to today’s pre-university level, providing him with the intellectual foundation that would later serve his many administrative roles.

The Entrepreneurial Journey: From Canteens to Supermarkets

M.A. Ghani was a brilliant businessman who “learned the ropes” at the SRK firm before venturing out on his own. His career in hospitality and retail was marked by a series of successful milestones across South India:

• Initial Ventures: He co-founded the Madurai Darbar restaurant in Chennai and operated a makeshift canteen in Nellore.
• The Vijayawada Era: In 1964, he launched the iconic Naurang Bakery and a successful canteen at the Naurang Theatre.
• Modern Retail: He eventually established a modern supermarket on the prestigious MG Road in Vijayawada—a business legacy now carried forward by his sons, Fayyaz and Fawad.

Beyond personal profit, he was a catalyst for others; he played a pivotal role in creating the Andhra Navayath Fund, which provided financial backing for aspiring community entrepreneurs.

A Lifetime of Service: The Anjuman Legacy

Ghani’s commitment to his hometown of Bhatkal remained unshakable throughout his life. His association with Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen began in 1954 when he was inducted into the executive committee at the remarkably young age of 18.

• Engineering Excellence: Alongside leaders like late S.M. Yahya and D.S. Shabbar, he was instrumental in the growth of the Anjuman Engineering College.
• Leadership Roles: He served as Vice President in 1980 and eventually ascended to the Presidency of Anjuman (2003–2008).
• Visionary Approach: He was known for solving critical problems with a “cool mind” and a pragmatic outlook that won him respect across all faiths and communities.

In recognition of his five decades of selfless service and his monumental impact on the community, the primary entrance to the educational hub was dedicated to him. It stands today as the Anjuman Abad Mohtesham Abdul Ghani Memorial Gate, a landmark that honors his role in shaping the future of countless students.

National Stature and Influence

Ghani Sahab’s influence extended far beyond the borders of Karnataka. He was a respected figure in national Islamic and educational circles, holding several prestigious positions:

• Member of the Syndicate/Senate: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
• Executive Member: All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
• Shura Member: Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow.
• Convener: The ‘Bain-ul-Jamati Conference’ held in Calicut in 2002.
• Public Advocate: Served on the Southern Railway Users Consultative Committee to address regional grievances.

Personal Life and Character

Despite his heavy responsibilities, Ghani Sahab was a man of diverse passions, including poetry, cricket, and traveling. He was known for his radical hospitality; his residence near the Noor Masjid on NH-66 was a hub for people of all castes and creeds seeking guidance or assistance.

He faced personal tragedy with grace, having lost a young daughter to a long-term illness several years before his own passing. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.

The End of an Era

M.A. Ghani passed away at 5:00 AM on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Murdeshwar Hospital, following complaints of arm pain. His death brought Bhatkal to a standstill:

• All educational institutions and businesses remained closed as a mark of respect.
• His funeral saw a massive gathering of people from various communities, reflecting his role as a bridge-builder.

His memory is preserved through various initiatives, including the M.A. Ghani Awards for Academic Excellence (organized by BJM-Mangalore) and the Mohtesham Abdul Ghani Memorial Educational Award (established by the Noor Sports Center in 2020).
