The Supreme Court has upheld the authority of the Election Commission of India to conduct Special Intensive Revision exercises aimed at updating voter lists. The ruling came after the court dismissed several petitions that questioned the commission’s powers to carry out large scale revisions of electoral records.

A bench led by the Chief Justice of India observed that keeping voter rolls accurate and updated is part of the Election Commission’s constitutional responsibility. The court said the commission has the power to remove duplicate entries, names of deceased individuals, and voters who have permanently shifted to other places.

Petitioners had argued that the revision process could be misused and might lead to genuine voters losing their voting rights. They also raised concerns that large numbers of deletions without proper ground level checks could affect vulnerable communities and influence local political equations.

Rejecting these claims, the Supreme Court stated that clean and reliable voter records are necessary to maintain trust in the democratic system. The judges noted that outdated or incorrect voter lists can weaken the transparency and fairness of elections.

At the same time, the court advised election authorities to act carefully during revision drives. It stressed that proper procedures, public notices, and verification steps must be followed to ensure that no eligible voter is wrongly removed from the electoral roll.
