Solid Waste Management Rules Must Be Implemented Effectively Across Uttara Kannada: Sajid Mulla
Additional Deputy Commissioner directs local bodies to ensure proper waste segregation, scientific disposal and public awareness.

Karwar: Additional Deputy Commissioner Sajid Mulla has instructed all urban local bodies and Gram Panchayats in Uttara Kannada district to ensure effective and timely implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026.
Addressing the District Level Monitoring Committee meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday, Sajid Mulla stressed the need for regular monitoring of waste management activities by local authorities.
He directed officials to ensure that waste is segregated at the source into dry waste, wet waste, sanitary waste and special care waste before collection from households. He emphasized that proper scientific methods should be followed for waste processing and disposal.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner also instructed authorities to adopt a cluster-based waste processing system in areas facing shortage of land for waste management facilities. He further highlighted the need for scientific disposal of existing legacy waste accumulated at local body waste disposal sites.
He called for cooperation from the Education Department to create awareness among students in schools and colleges about waste segregation, cleanliness and environmental protection.
Sajid Mulla also warned that dumping waste in public places, tourist spots, drains and water bodies, as well as burning waste, is prohibited. Strict action including penalties should be taken against those violating the rules.
The meeting was attended by Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary M.S. Allahbaksh, Urban Development Cell Project Director Zaheer Abbas, District Health Officer Dr. Shankar Rao, District Environment Officer Dr. Ganapati Hegde, Food Department Deputy Director Manjunath Revankar, Professor Dr. Shivakumar Haragi from the Marine Biology Department, officials from local bodies and others.
