According to an Al Jazeera correspondent, the airport in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region was targeted twice on Saturday. The reported incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following Iran’s response to alleged attacks by Israel and the United States.

Air defence systems reportedly intercepted the drone attacks, preventing further damage, according to media reports.

The United States is known to maintain troops in Iraq’s Kurdish region as part of the international coalition formed to combat Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/ISIS).

Authorities have yet to release an official statement detailing the circumstances of the crash.
