Religious Remark by Maharashtra Traffic Cop During Truck Check Triggers Outrage
A viral video has sparked widespread criticism after a traffic policeman allegedly questioned a truck driver's religion during a roadside inspection.
A traffic policeman in Maharashtra has come under fire after a video showing him allegedly making religious remarks to a truck driver during a routine roadside inspection went viral on social media.
The video captures a heated exchange between truck driver Shyamlal Rao and traffic police personnel. Rao, who belongs to the Hindu Jat community and is a resident of Rajasthan, began recording the interaction on his mobile phone as the argument escalated.
During the confrontation, one of the officers allegedly asked Rao whether he was a Muslim and accused him of displaying “gaddari,” or disloyal behaviour. The officer reportedly suggested that such conduct was not expected from a Hindu.
Rao strongly objected to the remarks and clarified that he was a Jat from Rajasthan. He questioned why his religion was being brought into a routine traffic matter and reminded the officers that government officials are expected to treat every citizen equally, regardless of their faith.
The video quickly gained attention online, drawing criticism from social media users across different communities. Many described the officer’s comments as inappropriate and discriminatory, saying law enforcement personnel should remain impartial while carrying out their duties.
Civil rights advocates also expressed concern, stressing that public servants must avoid statements or actions that could create communal divisions or undermine public trust.
The situation was later brought under control after a senior police officer intervened and listened to Rao’s complaint. Rao also demanded an apology from the traffic constable over the alleged remarks.
The incident has renewed discussions about professionalism, accountability, and communal sensitivity within public institutions. Many people have called for a departmental inquiry to determine whether the officer violated official conduct rules.
