The Karnataka Congress government has successfully overcome its first major political challenge after senior leader and cabinet minister Ramalinga Reddy decided to withdraw his resignation and continue serving in the state government.

The decision came after extensive discussions with the party leadership and a series of late night meetings aimed at resolving concerns raised by the veteran leader. The development has provided relief to the newly formed government and eased concerns about internal instability.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar dismissed reports of serious divisions within the party. He said all issues with Ramalinga Reddy had been settled and that the resignation matter was now closed.

Shivakumar stated that speculation about a growing rift within the Congress was unfounded. He described Ramalinga Reddy as a long time colleague and said that open discussions had helped address all misunderstandings and concerns.

According to reports, the Chief Minister held a detailed meeting with Ramalinga Reddy at a private hotel in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar area on Friday night. During the discussions, the minister reportedly presented his grievances and expectations regarding his role in the government.

Before that meeting, Shivakumar and his wife attended a dinner hosted by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, where senior leaders are said to have discussed the emerging political situation in Karnataka and ways to maintain unity within the cabinet.

The controversy began on Friday when Ramalinga Reddy unexpectedly announced his resignation only hours after the allocation of ministerial portfolios. He was reportedly unhappy after being assigned the Irrigation Department instead of the Bengaluru Development portfolio, which he had hoped to receive.

During a press conference, the senior leader expressed disappointment, saying his long political experience had not been given due consideration. He also claimed that assurances made to him earlier had not been honoured, leading to frustration over the final allocation of departments.

Political observers viewed the resignation as the first significant challenge for the new government led by D. K. Shivakumar. However, the swift intervention of both state and national Congress leaders helped prevent the issue from escalating further.

With the matter now resolved, the government is expected to focus on governance, development initiatives, and fulfilling its election promises, while projecting an image of unity within the party.
