Rahul Gandhi and Kharge Stage Protest Outside PM Residence After Delhi Police Action
Congress leaders intensify pressure on the Centre as student protests continue despite a police crackdown in Delhi.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge held a sit in protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on Tuesday, stepping up their criticism of the Union government over the police action against protesting students and young people in Delhi.
Rahul Gandhi said the Congress leadership marched to the Prime Minister’s residence to demand answers over what he described as the harsh treatment of students during Monday’s protests. In a post on X, he accused the government of avoiding accountability and refusing to discuss the issue in Parliament. He also called for the resignation of the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister, alleging that the government’s actions had harmed the future of India’s youth.
Meanwhile, large crowds gathered once again at Jantar Mantar, where protesters continued their demonstration. Despite heavy rain, thousands remained at the site, with more people arriving through both entry points. Security was tightened across the area as paramilitary personnel were deployed and barricades slowed traffic movement.
Following Monday’s clashes with police, the youth led Cockroach Janta Party announced that it would not continue its planned march towards Parliament. The group said another attempt could place more young protesters at risk and decided to continue its movement through other forms of protest instead.
The protest movement has now entered its twenty fourth day. Organisers claimed that hundreds of people were injured during Monday’s police action, which took place when demonstrators tried to march towards Parliament.
