Rahul Gandhi Alleges ‘Mandate Theft’ After BJP Wins in Bengal and Assam
Congress leader urges parties to rise above politics, calls election outcome a threat to democracy

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly criticised the BJP’s recent electoral victories in West Bengal and Assam, describing them as a “theft” of the public mandate. His remarks came a day after the results of the 2026 assembly elections were announced.
In a message shared on X, Gandhi expressed concern over what he called a larger threat to democratic institutions. He claimed that the BJP’s wins in the two states marked a significant step in what he described as an attempt to weaken India’s democratic framework.
Gandhi also voiced support for the Trinamool Congress, which suffered a major defeat in West Bengal. He appealed to political leaders, including members within his own party, to avoid celebrating the loss.
He emphasised that the situation should not be viewed through the lens of party rivalry. According to him, the issue goes beyond electoral competition and concerns the future of the country as a whole.
“Set aside petty politics. This is not about one party versus another. This is about India,” Gandhi said, urging a broader perspective on the developments.
The BJP’s victory saw it unseat the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, while also retaining power in Assam for a third consecutive term. The results have intensified political debate, with sharp reactions emerging from leaders across the spectrum.
Gandhi’s comments reflect the growing tensions in national politics as parties respond to the changing electoral landscape and its wider implications.
