Questions During CJI Surya Kant’s London Lecture Spark Debate, Indian High Commission Responds
A discussion on free speech and judicial remarks during a London event drew objections from organisers and criticism from the Indian High Commission.

An event featuring Chief Justice of India Surya Kant at Birkbeck, University of London, became the centre of attention after audience members raised questions about freedom of expression in India and comments attributed to the Chief Justice. The incident has since triggered debate and prompted a response from the Indian High Commission in London.
According to reports, Justice Surya Kant is currently on a six day official visit to the United Kingdom. On Thursday, he delivered a lecture at Birkbeck College on the topic of artificial intelligence and international law.
The situation developed during the question and answer session following the lecture. An audience member attempted to raise concerns regarding freedom of speech in India and referred to a controversy linked to remarks allegedly associated with the Chief Justice. Event organisers intervened and reportedly ruled the question unrelated to the subject of the lecture, preventing further discussion on the issue.
The exchange led to a brief period of tension inside the venue, with some attendees expressing differing views on whether such questions should have been allowed.
Following the incident, the Indian High Commission issued a statement criticising the manner in which the disruption occurred. The mission described the behaviour as inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards expected at a public academic event.
The High Commission said that disagreement and debate are natural parts of democratic societies but stressed that discussions should take place in a respectful and civil manner.
The episode has also renewed wider conversations about freedom of expression, democratic values, and public accountability, issues that are often raised at international forums involving Indian institutions and officials.
During his lecture, Justice Surya Kant focused on the growing role of artificial intelligence in legal systems. He stated that technology itself is neither inherently beneficial nor harmful and that its impact depends on how it is used by society. He also emphasised that the law should guide technological development in a manner consistent with constitutional principles and human dignity.
Despite the controversy, Justice Surya Kant has continued with his scheduled engagements in the United Kingdom. On Friday, he participated in an international conference focused on economic cooperation between India and the United Kingdom.
The London event has nevertheless generated fresh discussion about public discourse, freedom of expression, and the challenges faced by institutions when responding to criticism in international settings.
