New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic drowning incident in Bhatkal, where eight members of the same family lost their lives after being swept away by strong river currents.

The heartbreaking incident took place in Uttara Kannada district while the family had reportedly gone to collect shells near a local river. The victims included women and children, leaving the entire region in grief and shock.

In an official statement, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and described the loss of so many lives from a single household as deeply painful. He said his thoughts and prayers are with the affected family members during this difficult time.

Along with expressing sympathy, the Prime Minister also announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. An ex gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of each deceased victim.

Additionally, financial support of Rs 25,000 has been announced for those injured in the incident.

Officials said the relief measures are intended to provide immediate support to the grieving family while local authorities continue administrative procedures and review safety measures around water bodies in the region.
