Opposition MPs to meet Sonam Wangchuk as CJP urges him to end 25 day hunger strike
The party has appealed to Wangchuk to prioritise his health while promising to continue the campaign for examination reforms.
The Cockroach Janta Party has appealed to climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to end his hunger strike, which entered its 25th day on Wednesday. The party said his protest has inspired students across the country and pledged to continue the movement for examination reforms even after he ends his fast.
In a message shared on X, the CJP thanked Wangchuk for his commitment and urged him to focus on his health. The party said his sacrifice had united thousands of students and strengthened the demand for fairness and accountability in the education system.
The CJP also assured Wangchuk that the campaign would continue until its demands for examination justice are fulfilled, including action over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
Meanwhile, a group of Opposition Members of Parliament is expected to visit Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. According to PTI, the delegation plans to request him to end his fast while assuring him that concerns related to examination irregularities and accountability in the education sector will be raised during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The delegation is expected to include Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose and CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas.
Earlier, Wangchuk had said he would call off his hunger strike if political leaders and Members of Parliament committed to taking up the issue in Parliament. However, after police action against protesters during the Cockroach Janta Party’s Sansad Chalo march, he decided to continue his fast until such assurances were received.
Wangchuk joined the CJP led protest at Jantar Mantar on June 28 and began an indefinite hunger strike in support of students seeking education reforms, accountability over examination irregularities and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
He was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police on July 18 and was later shifted to Medanta Hospital following an order from the Delhi High Court.
