Bhatkal Fitrah Committee Distributes Over 1 Lakh Kilos of Rice This Eid
More than 2,100 families across the Karnataka coast receive Fitrah rice on Eid night

The Fitrah Committee of Bhatkal successfully completed its annual Eid distribution drive this year, delivering over 107,000 kilograms of rice to 2,144 families across a wide stretch of Karnataka’s coastal region, from Kundapur and Shiroor in the north to Bhatkal, Honnavar, Sharavathi Belt, Kumta, and Ankola in the south.
All distributions were completed on the night of Eid ul-Fitr itself, ensuring families received their share before the celebrations began.
Each family was given an average of 50 kilograms of rice. Larger families facing poverty or disability received up to one quintal (100 kg). In addition, every household in Bhatkal and surrounding areas also received 5 kilograms of Basmati rice, a practice now in its fifth consecutive year, with a total of over 10,700 kg of Basmati distributed this time.
Committee Convener Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Nadvi Bhatkali shared that this collective Fitrah distribution has been running continuously for 41 years in Bhatkal, growing stronger each year. This year, 55 distribution zones were set up across all areas, and fresh surveys were conducted in every zone before distribution. As a result of the updated survey, around 102 families were removed from the list to ensure aid reached only those truly in need.
Families who do not typically eat boiled rice were given Sona Masoori rice instead, showing the committee’s attention to local food preferences.
A significant portion of the rice collected this year came from Bhatkal Muslim communities living in Gulf countries. The committee also acknowledged the active role played by local youth from various neighbourhoods and sports centres, as well as local religious scholars who contributed to making the drive a success.
Two planning meetings were held during Ramadan to organise the collection and distribution process, followed by a review gathering on 28 March 2026 at Al-Hilal Association Club, Makhdoom Colony, Bhatkal. The event brought together representatives from Gulf-based Bhatkal Muslim organisations, heads of local religious and educational institutions, community elders, and scholars.
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Convener Syed SM Parvez, while Maulana Ilyas Nadvi presented the full report including income and expenditure accounts. Several community leaders addressed the gathering and offered suggestions for further expanding the initiative.
The session concluded with a prayer led by Maulana Abdul Noor Nadvi, followed by a community lunch.
