Major Tragedy Averted as Landslide Hits School Building Near Nellekeri in Kumta
A massive boulder crashed onto a school building following a landslide, but timely evacuation of students prevented any casualties.
A major tragedy was narrowly averted on Friday after a landslide near Karnataka Public School in the Nellekeri area of Kumta caused a huge boulder to crash into the school building.
According to reports, school authorities had taken precautionary measures in advance due to continuous heavy rainfall and the area’s history of landslides. A similar incident had occurred in the same locality last year.
Considering the potential danger, students studying in classrooms located in the vulnerable zone were shifted to safer parts of the campus before the incident occurred.
Just moments after the evacuation was completed, a section of the hill gave way and a massive rock rolled down, striking the school building and causing damage to the structure.
The incident created panic on the school premises for some time. However, owing to the timely action of the school administration, no students or staff members were injured.
Karnataka Public School caters to students from LKG to PUC and has an enrolment of more than a thousand students.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, concerned officials visited the spot and inspected the damage. Discussions were also held regarding further safety measures to protect students and staff.
In view of the continuing heavy rains across Uttara Kannada district, authorities have urged educational institutions and residents living in landslide-prone areas to remain alert and adopt necessary precautionary measures.
