Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of misusing donations collected for the construction of the Sri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter.

Speaking at a party event in Bengaluru, Kharge alleged that nearly ₹5,000 crore collected from devotees and donors for the temple project had been misused. He claimed that there has been a lack of transparency in the management of the funds and questioned why a detailed public account of the donations has not been released.

Kharge alleged that funds raised over several years, including during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, had not been properly accounted for. He also accused the BJP of using the temple issue for political purposes while failing to ensure transparency in the handling of donations.

The Congress leader criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the inauguration of the temple, alleging that the ceremony was conducted in haste for political gains. He also questioned why central investigative agencies had not acted on reports alleging financial irregularities related to the temple project.

Referring to the 15 day inquiry ordered by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath into the allegations, Kharge said the investigation should be completed fairly and those found responsible should face legal action without delay.

Kharge further alleged that the faith of millions of devotees had been exploited for political and financial benefits. He also linked the issue to what he described as wider governance failures by the National Democratic Alliance government, including its handling of the NEET UG examination controversy.

The BJP and the RSS have not responded to Kharge’s allegations at the time of publication.
