Kharge Accuses PM Modi of Undermining Democracy Ahead of Elections
Congress chief alleges misuse of central agencies and questions delay in implementing women’s reservation

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has stepped up his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of weakening democratic institutions and using government agencies to target political opponents ahead of upcoming elections.
Speaking at a press conference in Chennai alongside party leader K. C. Venugopal, Kharge claimed that the ruling government is creating an atmosphere of fear among opposition parties and citizens. During his remarks, he initially used a controversial term while referring to the Prime Minister, but later clarified that he meant Modi was instilling fear in the political system rather than making a literal accusation.
Kharge alleged that central agencies such as the CBI, Enforcement Directorate, and Income Tax Department are being used to pressure opposition leaders. He also criticised the Election Commission, claiming it has failed to act independently and has overlooked alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
Reinforcing unity within the alliance in Tamil Nadu, Kharge dismissed speculation of any differences between Rahul Gandhi and M. K. Stalin. He described their relationship as strong and cooperative.
On the issue of women’s reservation, Kharge questioned the delay in implementation despite the law being passed unanimously in 2023. He argued that the policy could be rolled out immediately within the current Lok Sabha structure and accused the government of lacking intent.
He also raised concerns over the proposed delimitation exercise, warning that it may disadvantage states in southern and northeastern India that have successfully managed population growth.
Outlining the alliance’s promises, Kharge highlighted plans to provide financial support to women and senior citizens, ensure food security assistance, and fill government job vacancies within a fixed timeframe.
