Bengaluru: Household electricity consumers across Karnataka will receive their power bills for July based on their average electricity usage over the past three months instead of actual meter readings.
The temporary arrangement has been introduced because meter readers have been assigned to conduct door to door verification of beneficiaries under the state’s Gruha Jyothi scheme. According to officials, this additional responsibility has affected the regular meter reading and billing process.
The Electricity Department said that from July 1 to August 31, meter readers will focus on checking beneficiary records for the welfare scheme. As a result, July bills for residential consumers will be calculated using the average number of units consumed during the previous three months.
Officials clarified that this change applies only to domestic consumers. Commercial and industrial electricity users will continue to receive bills based on actual meter readings as usual.
The department also assured consumers that any difference between the estimated bill and the actual electricity consumed will be adjusted in the August bill. Customers who use more electricity than the estimated average will pay the additional amount later, while those who consume less will receive the appropriate adjustment.
Authorities said the temporary billing system is expected to remain in place only for July, after which normal meter reading and billing operations will resume.
