Bengaluru (Fikrokhabar News): The Karnataka government is considering strict measures against the manufacture, sale and storage of half helmets as part of efforts to prevent road accidents and improve the safety of two wheeler riders.

The government is also examining the possibility of imposing fines and initiating legal action against those involved in their production and sale. State Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh shared this information while speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha.

The minister said the government was seriously considering action against manufacturers and traders selling half helmets. Strict measures may particularly be taken against shopkeepers who sell or stock these helmets for commercial purposes.

Highlighting the risks associated with half helmets, Suresh said they do not provide complete protection to two wheeler riders. Such helmets leave parts of the head, including the ears and neck, exposed, increasing the risk of serious injuries in the event of an accident.

He noted that half helmets are generally cheaper than full protective helmets, which leads some riders to prefer them. However, he stressed that their lower price does not make them a safe option.

The minister said the government’s priority was to protect the lives of people using roads and that necessary steps would be taken to achieve this.

Suresh also indicated strict action against motorists who drive two wheelers and other vehicles on footpaths. The government is considering a fine of ₹5,000 for the first violation and ₹10,000 for repeat offences.

He pointed out that footpaths are meant for pedestrians, but some motorists use them to avoid traffic or move ahead quickly, putting the safety of pedestrians at risk.

The Transport Minister also urged officials to take effective measures to improve traffic management and ensure public safety on roads.
