A controversy has erupted in Karnataka following allegations that students appearing for the Common Entrance Test were asked to remove religious symbols at an examination centre in Bengaluru. The incident has drawn strong reactions from both the government and religious organisations.

State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao criticised the reported actions, calling them unacceptable and insensitive. He said that forcing students to remove items such as sacred threads, ear studs, bangles, or hijabs, and even cutting sleeves of clothing, was an inhuman practice that could harm students’ confidence and dignity.

The minister assured that the government has taken the matter seriously and promised a fair and transparent investigation. He emphasised that examination centres should focus on assessing students’ knowledge, not interfere with their personal or religious identity. He also encouraged affected students to remain confident, assuring them that the government stands with them.

The incident reportedly took place at a private college in the Madivala area of Bengaluru. Following complaints, authorities suspended one invigilator, while three staff members were taken in for questioning by the police. A case has also been registered, and an investigation is currently underway.

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Karnataka strongly condemned the episode. The organisation stated that asking students to remove sacred threads was a violation of religious rights and an insult to cultural traditions. It described the sacred thread as an important symbol of identity and dignity for the Hindu community.

The group also pointed out that similar incidents had been reported in the past and expressed concern over what it called a disturbing pattern. It urged authorities to take strict action against those responsible and ensure such situations do not happen again.

The CET examination is a key entrance test for students seeking admission to professional courses across Karnataka, making the issue particularly sensitive for thousands of candidates and their families.
