Karnataka Bans Objectionable Dance in School Cultural Events; AIITA Welcomes Move
Teachers’ body says decision will help protect educational values and school environment

Bhatkal: The All India Ideal Teachers Association (AIITA) Karnataka unit has welcomed the state government’s decision to ban objectionable songs and inappropriate dance performances in cultural programmes held by schools across Karnataka.
In a press statement, AIITA Karnataka president M R Manavi said the move is a positive step to preserve the dignity of educational institutions and protect students from exposure to content considered unsuitable for school settings. He said such measures are necessary to safeguard the credibility of the education system.
The government order applies to government, aided, and private schools, and aims to regulate performances during annual cultural events. According to the education department’s directive, content involving obscene elements or inappropriate performances has been linked to negative effects on students’ mental well being and moral values.
Instead, schools have been instructed to encourage programmes based on patriotic themes, positive messages, and local cultural traditions. The directive also promotes the use of skits and performances that highlight moral values.
The education department has further made it mandatory for students to wear decent attire during such events. It has warned that strict disciplinary action will be taken against headmasters of schools that violate the guidelines.
AIITA has extended full support to the government’s stance and urged district education officials to closely monitor compliance. The association said schools should remain spaces of learning, harmony, and character building rather than platforms for content that could affect social or cultural harmony.
The organisation also stressed that cultural programmes should promote unity, discipline, and educational values among students.
