Islamia Anglo Urdu High School Bhatkal Holds Programme on Muharram and Honours Outstanding Deeniyat Students
Students learned about the significance of Muharram and Ashura as the school recognised high achievers in Deeniyat examinations.

Bhatkal: Islamia Anglo Urdu High School, Bhatkal, organised a joint inaugural programme on Friday at the Usman Hasan Hall under the Deeniyat, Library, and Physical Education Clubs. The event began at 11.30 am with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Mohammed Farzam Ibn Bawameer Jabali, followed by a heartfelt rendition of Naat by Abdul Qadir.
Headmaster Noor Mohammed welcomed the chief guest, while Dr Abdul Hafeez Nadvi introduced Maulana Adnan Quazi Nadvi, a faculty member of Jamia Islamia Bhatkal, who attended as the guest speaker.
In his address, Maulana Adnan Quazi Nadvi highlighted the importance and virtues of the holy month of Muharram. He explained that Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is referred to in Islamic tradition as “Shahrullah Al Muharram,” meaning the Month of Allah. He also spoke about the establishment of the Islamic calendar during the caliphate of Hazrat Umar Farooq R.A based on the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Speaking about the significance of Ashura, Maulana Adnan explained that fasting on the tenth of Muharram was initially obligatory before the fasts of Ramadan were prescribed. He said that fasting on Ashura is now a Sunnah and carries the hope of forgiveness for the minor sins of the previous year. Referring to authentic narrations, he explained that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he saw the Jewish community fasting on Ashura in gratitude for the deliverance of Prophet Musa A.S from Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ then encouraged Muslims to observe fasting on the ninth and tenth or the tenth and eleventh of Muharram.
He also briefly narrated the story of Prophet Musa عليه السلام and Pharaoh and advised students to uphold Islamic values and good character. He stressed the importance of respecting parents, teachers, and elders, describing teachers as spiritual guides whose role extends beyond classroom education.
Encouraging students to combine knowledge with practice, he reminded them that acting upon what they learn is more valuable than acquiring knowledge alone. He congratulated the students who had secured outstanding results in last year’s Deeniyat examinations and urged them to implement the teachings they had learned in their daily lives.
Following the address, prizes were distributed to students who achieved excellent marks in the previous year’s Deeniyat examinations.
The programme was conducted by Dr Abdul Hafeez Nadvi and concluded with a vote of thanks.
