India’s electric two wheeler market continued its strong growth in June 2026, crossing an important milestone with more than 6,000 vehicle registrations every day. The sharp increase reflects the growing popularity of electric mobility as more consumers move away from petrol powered vehicles.

According to the latest figures from the government’s Vahan portal, 181,168 electric two wheelers were registered during June. This marks a 64 percent increase compared to the same month last year, when average daily registrations were around 3,600 vehicles.

June became the second highest month ever for electric two wheeler registrations in India. The highest monthly total was recorded in March 2026, when 192,508 units were sold. That surge was largely driven by financial year end purchases and buying ahead of expected price increases linked to rising raw material costs.

Poonam Upadhyay, Director at Crisil Ratings, said the industry’s strong performance has been supported by lower operating costs, better technology, and the growing participation of major automobile manufacturers. She added that companies have expanded their product range with more affordable models while strengthening sales and service networks across cities as well as rural regions.

Higher petrol prices have also encouraged more buyers to switch to electric vehicles. Since February 28, petrol prices have increased by nearly ₹7 per litre following the West Asia conflict, increasing fuel expenses for many households.

Industry experts believe the growing demand is not just a short term reaction to rising fuel prices. They say electric two wheelers are steadily becoming a mainstream choice for Indian consumers because of their long term savings and improved convenience.

Electric two wheelers accounted for 10.5 percent of all new two wheeler registrations in June, compared with 7.3 percent during the same period last year. Monthly registrations have also shown consistent growth, rising from 139,000 units in April to 173,000 units in May before reaching 181,168 units in June.

Sudarshan Venu, Chairman and Managing Director of a leading automobile company, said in the company’s annual financial report that the outlook for electric vehicles remains strong despite uncertainty in global energy markets. He also highlighted the success of the Battery as a Service model, which reduces the initial purchase cost by allowing customers to pay separately for the battery.

Industry analysts expect electric two wheeler sales and registrations to continue rising during the upcoming festive season as consumer demand remains strong.
