From Dust to Life Again: A Reflection on Surah Al‐Hajj –(22:5–7)

After shaking you with the reality of the Hour in the first four ayahs of Surah Al-Hajj,
Allah does something profound.
He doesn’t just leave you in fear.
He brings you back…
to your own beginning.
When Doubt Meets Your Own Origin
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّنَ الْبَعْثِ فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن تُرَابٍ
“O mankind, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection–then indeed, We created you from dust…”
– Qur’an 22:5
Again–“O mankind.”
Because doubt about the Hereafter
is not limited to one group.
It’s a quiet question many carry:
“How will we be brought back… after becoming nothing?”
So Allah answers–not with abstraction,
but with something deeply personal:
You.
You were once dust.
Not breathing.
Not thinking.
Not even existing in a form you could recognize,
And yet– you are here.
Living proof
that creation from nothing
has already happened once.
Allah created you the first time
without any example before it.
No model. No precedent.
And He created you perfectly–
in a way that is entirely your own.
So if the first creation happened
from nothing at all–
what makes the second seem difficult?
The One who brought you into existence
without a template
does not struggle to bring you back again.
The Journey You Never Witnessed
Allah then unfolds your story–step by step.
From dust…
to a drop of fluid…
to a clinging form…
to a lump of flesh–formed and unformed…
Until you are brought into this world.
Not randomly.
Not vaguely.
But with precsion.
Every stage deliberate.
Every transformation guided.
And then–
“…that We may make clear to you.”
You didn’t witness your own creation.
You don’t remember these stages.
Yet you don’t question them.
So why question resurrection–
when the One who created you once
is the same One promising to bring you back?
Life, Death, and the Illusion of Control
“And among you is he who is taken in death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit age…”
Some lives end early.
Some stretch into old age–
until strength fades, memory weakens,
and a person returns to a state of dependence.
It’s a quiet reminder:
Control was never really yours.
Not at the beginning.
Not in the middle.
And not at the end.
The Earth That Mirrors You
“And you see the earth barren–
but when We send down water upon it, it quivers, swells, and grows every kind of beautiful pair.”
A lifeless land.
Dry. Still. Without sign of life.
Then rain falls–
And suddenly,
movement returns.
Growth begins.
Life emerges from what looked completely dead.
This isn’t just nature.
It’s a reflection.
Just as the earth comes back to life–
so will you.
The same nature (قدرت)
that revives dead earth
will revive dead bodies.
The Truth Behind It All
“That is because Allah is the Truth,
and He gives life to the dead,
and He is over all things competent.”
– Qur’an 22:6
Everything leads back to this:
Allah is Al-Haqq – The Ultimate Reality.
Not your doubts.
Not your assumptions.
Not what feels permanent in this world.
He is the only constant.
A Promise That Will Not Fail
وَأَنَّ السَّاعَةَ آتِيَةٌ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهَا
وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ مَن فِي الْقُبُورِ
“And that the Hour is coming–no doubt about it–
and that Allah will resurrect those in the graves.”
– Qur’an 22:7
Not “might come.”
Not “could happen.”
آتية – it is coming.
Certain. Inevitable. Unavoidable.
Just like your beginning was not in your control–
your return will not be either.
The Deeper Purpose Behind These Verses
In a surah centered around pilgrimage, sacrifice, and submission, this reminder comes for a reason.
Surah Al-Hajj is not just about the journey of Hajj–it is about preparing the heart for a much greater return.
Before speaking of rituals, Allah addresses something deeper: certainty.
Because rituals without conviction become empty movements.
Hajj itself is a journey that mirrors resurrection–
leaving behind comfort,
standing among millions,
wearing the same simple clothing,
as if reminding you of the day you will stand before Him with nothing but your deeds.
So these verses ground you:
The One you are journeying to worship
is the same One who created you from nothing,
will take you back,
and will bring you forth again.
Without this belief, Hajj is just travel.
With it, every step becomes preparation
for the ultimate meeting.
A Reflection to Sit With
In Part 1 (22:1-4),
Allah shook your sense of stability.
In Part 2 (22:5-7),
He shows you something even deeper:
You are already a miracle you didn’t witness.
Your existence is proof
that resurrection is not impossible–
just unfamiliar.
So the question is no longer:
“Can it happen?”
But rather:
Are you living like you will return?
