Dilip Ghosh Says BJP Does Not Need Muslim Votes in West Bengal, Sparks Political Row

A recent statement by senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has stirred controversy in West Bengal’s political circles. Speaking in an interview, the former state BJP president said the party sees little reason to actively seek support from Muslim voters, claiming they have historically not backed the BJP.

Ghosh used a personal analogy to explain his stance, suggesting that inviting someone who is unlikely to attend holds little value. His comments come at a crucial time as political parties prepare for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state, where Muslims make up a significant portion of the population.

He also linked political representation to voting patterns, stating that the BJP would consider giving more tickets to Muslim candidates only if there is noticeable support from the community. For now, he said, the party’s focus remains on strengthening its base among Hindu voters.

Highlighting past performance, Ghosh noted that the BJP secured a majority share of Hindu votes in previous elections. He emphasized that increasing this support further is key to achieving electoral success in the state.

At the same time, he acknowledged that Muslim voters are not a uniform group and do not all support a single party. According to him, smaller political parties have also managed to attract sections of Muslim voters in past elections.

Opposition leaders have strongly criticized Ghosh’s remarks, accusing the BJP of promoting division in a diverse state. They argue that such statements risk deepening communal tensions and sidelining minority communities.
