D.K. Shivakumar Says Karnataka Aims to Become Drug Free by 2028
The state plans stricter enforcement, expanded rehabilitation services, and public awareness campaigns to tackle drug abuse and trafficking.
Senior Karnataka leader D.K. Shivakumar has said the state government is working towards making Karnataka completely drug free by 2028 through a combination of strict enforcement and rehabilitation measures.
Speaking during a high level review meeting with police and enforcement officials, Shivakumar said the government is preparing a comprehensive strategy to curb drug trafficking and protect young people from substance abuse.
He said the administration will follow a zero tolerance policy against drug peddlers, traffickers, and organised criminal networks. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to intensify action against narcotics supply chains, with particular attention on areas around schools, colleges, universities, and major technology hubs.
Alongside stricter policing, the government plans to strengthen rehabilitation services across the state. Modern de addiction and rehabilitation centres are expected to be established in every district to provide affordable treatment, counselling, and mental health support for people affected by substance abuse.
Shivakumar also appealed to educational institutions, parents, and community organisations to support the state’s anti drug campaign. He said local police will conduct regular awareness programmes in colleges to educate students about the health risks and legal consequences associated with narcotics.
He further warned that police personnel found ignoring illegal drug activities in their jurisdictions would face strict disciplinary action, including suspension and criminal proceedings. The government is also considering fast track courts to speed up trials involving major drug trafficking cases and improve conviction rates.
