Karwar: In an effort to tackle the growing problem of drug abuse, K. Lakshmi Priya, Deputy Commissioner of Karwar district, has instructed authorities to carry out raids on suspicious homestays and resorts. The directive was issued during a meeting of the NCORD committee held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday.

Expressing concern over increasing drug related cases, the Deputy Commissioner noted that a large number of individuals involved fall within the 18 to 35 age group. She emphasized the need for preventive action and awareness, particularly among young people.

The education department has been directed to organize large scale awareness programs in colleges across the district. These initiatives will focus on informing students about the harmful effects of drug use and encouraging them to stay away from such substances.

Strict instructions have also been given to the drug control department. Medical stores across the district must ensure that no addictive medicines are sold without a valid doctor’s prescription. Shop owners have been told to display awareness posters, and any violations will invite strong legal action.

Police have been asked to promote the Drug Free Karnataka app among the public. The application allows citizens to share information about drug storage and supply, helping authorities act swiftly. All concerned departments have also been directed to submit monthly inspection reports without fail.

During the meeting, Superintendent of Police Deepan M N shared enforcement data for 2026 so far. He reported that eight cases related to drug supply have been registered, leading to the arrest of 14 individuals and the seizure of ganja worth Rs 1,49,500. Additionally, 97 cases of drug consumption have been recorded, with 112 people taken into custody.

Senior officials from police, health, education, port, and fisheries departments attended the meeting, reflecting a coordinated effort to address the issue across sectors.
