A fresh controversy has emerged around the historic “Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra” mosque in Ajmer, Rajasthan, after a Hindutva organisation demanded permission to conduct Hindu religious rituals at the protected monument.

The organisation, Maharana Pratap Sena, has reportedly sought approval to recite the Hanuman Chalisa and perform Hindu worship practices inside the mosque, which is maintained under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The demand has triggered concern and unease among members of the Muslim community and local residents, who fear that the issue could disturb communal harmony in the region.

In its petition, the organisation claimed that the structure was originally a temple and a Sanskrit learning centre before it was converted into a mosque. Members of the group pointed to architectural features, carvings, and symbols on the pillars and walls as evidence of what they describe as the site’s Hindu origins.

Based on these claims, the group has sought official permission to carry out religious rituals inside the monument. Critics argue that such activities would violate rules governing protected archaeological sites.

According to historical records, the mosque was built in 1199 CE by Qutb ud Din Aibak, the military commander of Muhammad Ghori and later the first ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. The structure is regarded as one of the oldest mosques in North India.

The mosque later underwent expansion during the reign of Sultan Iltutmish and became known for its Indo Islamic architecture, towering arches, intricate stone carvings, and beautifully inscribed Quranic calligraphy on red sandstone. The site attracts thousands of visitors and tourists every year.

Local Muslim organisations and scholars have expressed concern that several historic mosques across the country are increasingly becoming subjects of disputes and legal challenges.

The recent developments have also revived discussions surrounding the Bhojshala and Kamal Maula Mosque dispute in Madhya Pradesh, where court proceedings and archaeological claims led to renewed tensions between communities.

Community leaders in Ajmer have appealed to the administration to strictly enforce laws related to the protection of places of worship and ASI protected monuments. They stressed the need to preserve peace and communal harmony in the city.

Authorities have reportedly increased monitoring in the area considering the sensitivity of the issue.
