Colombia’s President Petro: Attack on Gaza Flotilla Would Be a ‘Crime Against Humanity’

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has strongly warned that any Israeli attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla would amount to a “crime against humanity” and a flagrant breach of international law. In a statement posted on social media, Petro called for “absolute respect for the lives and integrity” of the hundreds of crew members aboard the humanitarian convoy heading for Gaza’s coast.

Petro emphasized that the flotilla’s mission is civilian, humanitarian, and nonviolent, and targeted any aggression against it as a grave international offense. He revealed that all crew members are “wearing life jackets in anticipation of a possible Israeli interception,” highlighting the real risk faced by those on board.

Two Colombians, Manuela Bedoya and Luna Barreto, are among the international activists traveling on the flotilla, which is attempting to break the Israeli naval blockade and deliver urgently needed aid to Gaza. In his statement, Petro noted their presence, reiterating Colombia’s solidarity with the mission and calling on all governments and citizens of the world to remain vigilant.

Petro’s stand is significant as it joins mounting international appeals to ensure the safe passage of the flotilla, even as Israeli naval forces are reportedly preparing for possible interception as the convoy nears the designated “high-risk zone.” Organizers of the Sumud Flotilla have called for worldwide solidarity, warning that an attack on their peaceful mission would signal a deep violation of humanitarian principles.
