In a major political تحول, the Bharatiya Janata Party has secured a decisive two thirds majority in the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 206 seats and ending the 15 year rule of the Trinamool Congress.

The results, announced on May 4, mark the first time the BJP will form a government in the state. The party’s aggressive campaign, led by Narendra Modi and strategist Amit Shah, delivered strong gains across regions and communities.

The scale of the victory was highlighted by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee losing the high profile Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. Several senior leaders from the TMC also faced defeats, pointing to a sharp decline in the party’s overall support.

Despite allegations of irregularities raised by Mamata Banerjee and other opposition figures, the BJP now faces the challenge of governing a politically divided state while meeting high public expectations. The results signal a shift toward a more competitive and polarized political environment in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen failed to make any impact in the elections. Contesting 11 constituencies with significant Muslim populations, the party was unable to win a single seat, with all its candidates losing and forfeiting their security deposits.

Reacting to the outcome, AIMIM spokesperson Adil Hussain said the party would review its performance and reassess its strategy. This marks the second consecutive setback for AIMIM in West Bengal, following a similar outcome in the previous elections.

The party had earlier formed an alliance with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party led by Humayun Kabir. However, the partnership was called off after a sting operation allegedly showed discussions suggesting an attempt to divide Muslim votes.
