Bhavikere Village Near Karwar Not Suitable for NTPC Project, Says Deputy Commissioner
Report cites security risks, proximity to key installations, and rehabilitation concerns

The district administration of Uttara Kannada has submitted a detailed report to the government stating that Bhavikere village near Karwar is not suitable for a proposed project by NTPC Limited.
Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya, in her report, highlighted several security, technical, and social concerns that make the location unfit for such a large scale project.
One of the primary issues raised is the village’s proximity to a proposed Indian Navy air base. The area falls within a sensitive security zone due to planned naval installations, making it unsuitable for major industrial development.
The report also pointed out that the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant is located just 45 to 50 kilometres away from Bhavikere. Having two major sensitive installations in close proximity was flagged as a potential national security concern.
Another key concern is the impact on local residents. Many people living in the village have already been displaced in the past for major infrastructure projects, including a national highway and the Navy’s Project Seabird. The administration noted that further displacement could create serious social and economic challenges for these families.
Taking all these factors into account, the Deputy Commissioner has advised the government against using the land for the NTPC project.
With the report now submitted, the final decision on the project rests with the government.
