In the newly formed Karnataka cabinet, former minister and Bhatkal MLA Mankal Vaidya did not receive a ministerial position, causing a stir in the political circles of Uttara Kannada district.

Analysts suggest that the cabinet prioritized senior leaders for the first list of appointments, which contributed to Vaidya missing out. The exclusion of even the district’s only senior Congress leader, R V Deshpande, has added to the discontent among local party members.

Vaidya has been a prominent figure in the coastal Congress, especially in fisheries, representing a key constituency in the region. There had been expectations that Uttara Kannada would receive cabinet representation, but the final list was prepared considering regional balance, caste representation, seniority, and internal party calculations. Former minister U T Khadar from Ullal constituency was included in the cabinet, a factor seen as reducing Vaidya’s chances this time.

The omission has caused disappointment among Vaidya’s supporters, though the party has not ruled out the possibility of his inclusion in a future cabinet expansion. The Congress leadership has not issued an official statement on the matter.

Political observers note that limited cabinet slots for the coastal region and the need to balance influence between D K Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah factions likely influenced the decision to leave Vaidya out. Despite the setback, there remains a possibility that his name may be considered when additional portfolios are allocated.
