Asphalt Leak from Commercial Ship Raises Pollution Concerns at Karwar Port
Authorities begin cleanup operations after bitumen spills into the port area and a small quantity reaches the sea.

A leakage of asphalt, also known as bitumen, from a commercial vessel at Karwar Port on Sunday has raised concerns over possible environmental impact in the coastal region.
The leak occurred from the ship MT Padmanabh, owned by a company based in Aligarh, while it was unloading asphalt at the port. The vessel was carrying 4,460.551 metric tonnes of bitumen from Shinas Port in Oman.
Initial reports suggest that the spill may have been caused by a technical issue during the unloading process. A significant amount of hot asphalt spread across parts of the port area, with a small quantity reportedly entering the seawater.
Local residents have expressed concern that the leaked material could affect marine life, including fish and other aquatic organisms. They also warned that if a layer of asphalt develops on the water surface, it could create difficulties for small fishing boats operating in the area.
Following the incident, concerned departments and agencies have started cleanup efforts to remove the spilled asphalt from the port and surrounding waters.
Residents have urged authorities to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the leakage and examine whether any safety lapses contributed to the incident.
