Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a crowd during a visit to Sonarpur South in West Bengal on Saturday, where he had gone to meet families allegedly affected by post election violence.

According to videos circulating on social media, stones, eggs and shoes were thrown at Banerjee’s convoy as he travelled through the South 24 Parganas district. The incident caused chaos at the site and prompted security personnel to quickly move him away from the area.

Footage from the scene showed Banerjee being escorted by security officials while wearing a police helmet for protection. His shirt appeared torn during the scuffle, highlighting the intensity of the confrontation.

The TMC leader was visiting the family of party worker Sanju Karmakar, who was killed, along with other families that the party claims faced attacks after the Assembly election results.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of being behind the attack. He criticised the security arrangements and claimed that police personnel were absent despite the tense situation.

Banerjee said the attackers intended to kill him and noted that the entire incident had been recorded on camera. He added that he planned to bring the matter before the Calcutta High Court and also inform the Governor about the attack.

Reacting to the incident, Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the violence. Sharing a video of the attack on social media, she accused the BJP of turning into “killers” and expressed outrage over the incident.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned the attack. In a post on X, he said the apparent lack of adequate police protection for a senior Opposition leader raised serious concerns. Kharge urged both the West Bengal government and the Union government to ensure the safety of Opposition leaders and take immediate steps to prevent such incidents, stressing that political disagreements should never lead to violence.
