A New Crescent, An Old Heart?

A New Crescent, An Old Heart?

There is something beautifully quiet about the arrival of the Islamic New Year.

No fireworks light up the sky.

No loud countdown echoes through the streets.

Yet beneath the silence lies a profound reminder: Allah has granted us another year of life, another chance to return to Him, and another opportunity to become better than we were yesterday.

As the moon of Muharram appears, it marks the beginning of a new Hijri year- a calendar born not from a worldly victory, but from a journey of faith.

The Hijrah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah was a migration filled with sacrifice, trust, patience, and complete reliance upon Allah.

It teaches us that every meaningful change begins with turning towards Allah.

And perhaps that is the question a new year asks each of us:

What within us needs to migrate?

A heart attached to the dunya towards a heart attached to Allah.

A tongue occupied with gossip towards one occupied with dhikr.

A soul burdened by sins towards a soul seeking repentance.

Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا۟ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.” -Qur’an 13:11

What a fitting reminder for the beginning of a new year.

We often hope for better days, better circumstances, and better outcomes.

Yet Allah directs our attention inward.

Before our situation changes, our hearts must change.

Before our surroundings transform, our relationship with Allah must transform.

The passing of a year is not merely the passing of time.

It is the passing of moments that can never be reclaimed.

The prayers we delayed.

The Qur’an we intended to read.

The good deeds we postponed.

The opportunities to seek forgiveness that we assumed would always remain.

Each year that leaves us behind carries a chapter of our story to Allah.

Hasan Al-Basri رحمه الله once said:

“O son of Adam, you are nothing but a collection of days. Whenever a day passes, a part of you passes away.”

How many years have come and gone while our goals remained focused on this world alone?

How many times have we planned for our careers, our homes, our studies, and our futures, yet forgotten to plan for the journey that awaits every soul?

Muharram arrives as a gentle wake-up call.

It reminds us that life is temporary, but our deeds are not.

That our bodies grow older, but our souls still have the chance to grow closer to Allah.

That every sunrise is a gift, and every new year is a mercy.

The beauty of Islam is that no matter how many mistakes fill our past, Allah allows us to begin again.

Perhaps this year, the greatest achievement will not be something the world applauds.

Perhaps it will be a prayer performed on time.

A page of Qur’an read consistently.

A sin abandoned for the sake of Allah.

A heart that learns to trust Him a little more.

A soul that remembers Him a little more often.

As we welcome this new Hijri year, let us not only exchange greetings- let us renew our intentions.

Let us seek forgiveness for what has passed.

Let us thank Allah for every blessing He has given.

Let us pray that the days ahead bring us closer to Him than the days behind us ever did.

May this year be a year of sincerity in worship, steadfastness in faith, peace in our hearts, and barakah in our lives.

May Allah forgive our shortcomings, accept our repentance, guide our steps, and make this year a means of drawing nearer to Him.

And when this year reaches its end, may we look back and find that our hearts have grown in faith, our deeds have grown in goodness, and our connection with Allah has grown stronger than ever before.

May this new year not simply add another year to our lives, but add more faith to our hearts and more light to our journey towards Allah.

Aameen Ya Rabb.
