New Zealand Prime Minister Criticizes Israeli Leader Netanyahu Over Gaza Conflict

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has spoken out sharply against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he has “lost the plot” in his handling of the conflict in Gaza. Luxon described the situation in Gaza as “utterly, utterly appalling” and criticized Netanyahu for ignoring international calls for restraint.
Netanyahu recently announced plans to take control of Gaza City and eliminate Hamas, which he states is the best way to end the ongoing conflict. However, these moves have led to severe humanitarian concerns. The United Nations and other experts have warned of an emerging widespread famine in Gaza, as Israel has heavily restricted humanitarian aid from entering the territory.
The war started after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on Israel in October 2023. Since then, Israel has faced increasing international criticism over its military campaign.
In response to the conflict, New Zealand is considering recognizing Palestine as a state. Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters revealed that a formal cabinet decision will be made in September regarding when and how New Zealand might officially give recognition to Palestine. This puts New Zealand in line with countries such as Australia, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom, which have also expressed support for Palestinian statehood.
Prime Minister Luxon’s comments reflect a growing concern within the international community about the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for a more balanced and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
