Yaseen Mohtisham Memorial Lecture Highlights the True Purpose of Education
Speakers paid tribute to late educator Yaseen Mohtisham, emphasizing that education should shape character as well as academic success.
A memorial lecture in honor of renowned Bhatkal educator Yaseen Mohtisham, fondly known as Yaseen Sir, was held by Mohtisham Academy to commemorate the first anniversary of his passing. Titled The Inaugural Yaseen Mohtisham Memorial Lecture, the event brought together educators, community leaders, former students, family members, and well wishers to celebrate his lasting contribution to education and character building.
The programme was organized to preserve Yaseen Mohtisham’s educational legacy and introduce his vision and values to the younger generation. Speakers reflected on his lifelong commitment to guiding students and promoting meaningful education.
Delivering the keynote address, Mujahidul Islam, an EdTech Specialist at Azim Premji University, said the true purpose of education is not limited to earning degrees or securing employment. He said education should help individuals become responsible, compassionate, and ethical human beings, a principle that Yaseen Sir practiced throughout his life.
He noted that Yaseen Mohtisham always worked to ensure that young people received the right guidance to succeed academically while also becoming valuable members of society. According to him, Yaseen Sir believed that knowledge carries a responsibility to benefit others.
Mujahidul Islam further said that although people eventually pass away, their character, values, and contributions continue to inspire future generations. He encouraged students to make meaningful use of their time by focusing on learning, personal development, and community service.
The programme was presided over by Qaiser Mohtisham, who described Yaseen Sir as a guiding light whose influence continues even after his passing. He said that while his death created a great void, his ideas and the students he mentored continue to spread his vision. He added that documenting his life and achievements would help inspire young people to dedicate themselves to serving society.
During the event, organizers also announced that a comprehensive book on the life, educational work, and intellectual journey of Yaseen Mohtisham is currently being prepared. A committee has already been formed to oversee the project, which is expected to serve as an important record for future generations.
The programme began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Maulana Syed Salik Ahmed Barmavar Nadwi, followed by a rendition of a Naat. The welcome address was delivered by Ghassan Chamandi, while the event was moderated by Zauriz Mashaikh. Among those present were Mohammad Bapu Basha, Saadullah Ruknuddin, teachers, students, and several distinguished guests.
Yaseen Mohtisham remained actively involved in the field of education for more than two decades. Through Mohtisham Academy, he mentored thousands of students and later served as Academic Coordinator and Advisor to the educational institutions of Anjuman Hami e Muslimeen. His innovative teaching methods, focus on intellectual and moral development, and dedication to student success earned him widespread respect in Bhatkal. His sudden passing last year was widely regarded as a significant loss to the town’s educational community.
