Thousands searched for Khizir Derbichev for eight days after he jumped into the icy Sunzha River to rescue a drowning companion, an act of heroism that has now inspired a global outpouring of grief.
In a small village in the Republic of Ingushetia, a tragedy has unfolded that has captured hearts across Russia and beyond. Eight-year-old Khizir Derbichev is being remembered as a true hero after he lost his life trying to save a friend from the frigid waters of the Sunzha River .
The incident occurred on June 15 near the village of Yandare. A group of children were playing by the river when one of them began to drown. Without a moment’s hesitation, Khizir jumped into the water. Before he leaped in, he reportedly told the other children, “Come on, we’re men, let’s save him” .
His quick thinking and bravery worked. He managed to help his friend get to safety. But the powerful current of the Sunzha River proved too strong for the young boy. He was swept away before anyone could reach him . The friend he saved survived, with no threat to his life or health .

The search ended on June 22 when volunteers discovered Khizir’s body on the right bank of the river, about 17 kilometers from the spot where he had jumped in to save his friend . The news sent a wave of grief across the region. The following day, thousands of people gathered in the village of Troitskoye to say goodbye to the young hero . His funeral was a public display of mourning, with streets filled with mourners.
In the wake of the tragedy, the words and actions of the eight-year-old have resonated deeply. Russian music producer Maxim Fadeev announced he had written a song to honor Khizir, saying the boy’s act of bravery “united people in a way you can only dream of” .
In recognition of his extraordinary courage, the head of Ingushetia has announced a decision to immortalize Khizir’s name . “His words and his act have become for all of us a symbol of courage, inner strength, and human dignity,” Kalimatov said. “The memory of Khizir should remain with us as a reminder of what we can be when we remain human” .
