Karwar: The Uttara Kannada district administration has completed extensive preparations to tackle the upcoming monsoon season following weather forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across the district in the coming days.

According to forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), moderate rainfall is expected on June 4 and 5, while significantly heavier rain is likely between June 6 and June 10. In response, District Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, K. Lakshmi Priya, has placed the entire district on high alert.

To ensure public safety and provide immediate assistance during emergencies, the administration has established 294 relief centres across the district. Nodal officers have been appointed at each centre to coordinate rescue and relief operations if required.

A report prepared by the Geological Survey of India has identified 439 locations in Uttara Kannada that are vulnerable to landslides. To closely monitor these sensitive areas, special spotters are being deployed, and training programmes for them are currently underway.As part of preventive measures, local civic bodies have completed the first phase of cleaning drains and water channels to reduce the risk of flooding. Relevant departments have also been instructed to inspect and ensure the safety of government schools, anganwadi centres, primary health centres, and hostel buildings.

The administration has directed BSNL and HESCOM officials to remain prepared with backup equipment and emergency resources to restore communication and electricity services quickly in the event of disruptions caused by severe weather.

Meanwhile, the District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) has been activated round the clock. Control rooms have also been established at the district and taluk levels to provide immediate assistance and respond swiftly to any emergency situation during the monsoon period.
