UP Administration Demolishes Alleged Illegal Eidgah Built on Graveyard Land in Sambhal
Revenue officials say the structure was removed following a court order over alleged encroachment on land reserved as a graveyard.
The Uttar Pradesh administration carried out a demolition drive in Sambhal district on Tuesday, removing an Eidgah that officials claimed had been built illegally on land recorded as a public graveyard.
The action took place in Madhan village, where revenue department officials used a bulldozer to clear the structure after receiving an order from the tehsildar’s court under the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code. A large police presence remained at the site to maintain law and order during the operation.
According to Tehsildar Dhirendra Pratap Singh, the disputed Eidgah stood on plot number 208, covering around 70 square metres along the Asmoli Lodhipur road. He said that plots 208, 210, 218, and 417 had originally been designated as graveyard land. While plot 210 continues to be used as a graveyard, officials alleged that plot 208 had been converted into an Eidgah without legal approval.
The administration said the demolition followed complaints and requests from local residents, who urged authorities to remove the alleged encroachment and restore the land to its recorded purpose.
Officials stated that the demolition was carried out in compliance with the court’s directions. They also confirmed that further legal action related to the alleged encroachment is currently in progress.
The incident has once again brought attention to disputes over public and religious land use in the region.
