Tragedy Off Libyan Coast: 18 Dead After Migrant Boat Capsizes Near Zawiya
A vessel carrying migrants overturned in rough seas off western Libya, leaving 18 people dead and dozens rescued in a desperate search operation.

TRIPOLI: A devastating maritime accident off Libya’s western coast has claimed at least 18 lives after a boat packed with migrants capsized near the city of Zawiya on Tuesday.
According to Zawiya’s Ambulance and Emergency Service, rescue workers managed to pull 92 survivors from the water following the incident. However, 18 people remain missing as search teams continue their efforts despite challenging weather conditions. Rough seas have made the rescue operation extremely difficult.
The boat was carrying people attempting to make the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, hoping to reach European shores. Libya has become a major departure point for migrants and refugees seeking better lives in Europe, despite the serious risks involved.
This tragedy comes just days after Libyan authorities stopped another large group of migrants from attempting the crossing near Benghazi, east of the capital. The incident highlights the ongoing migration crisis in the region, with thousands risking their lives each year on overcrowded and unsafe boats.
Rescue operations are still underway as authorities race against time and weather to locate the missing individuals.
