Tensions Rise in Thano After Mosque Sealed, Hindu Groups Hold Havan at Site
The sealing of a mosque in Dehradun's Thano area has sparked controversy, protests, and concerns over growing communal divisions.

Communal tensions have intensified in Thano, a locality in Dehradun, after authorities sealed the Jama Masjid on June 1 following a long running dispute over alleged unauthorised construction.
The action was carried out by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) amid sustained demands from several Hindu organisations. Among the most vocal was Kali Sena, whose state convener, Bhupesh Joshi, had publicly argued that a mosque should not operate close to a temple. He had also called the structure an illegal occupation and set June 1 as the deadline for vacating the premises.
The dispute is linked to claims that a portion of the mosque complex was constructed without approval. Earlier this year, the Uttarakhand High Court dismissed a petition filed by the Jama Masjid Society seeking relief. While the court declined to intervene in alleged violations, it left open the option for the society to pursue legal remedies through compounding procedures.
Hindu organisations, including Bajrang Dal and Kali Sena, have maintained that their campaign is aimed at removing illegal structures built on government land. They have particularly raised objections to constructions located near temples.
Members of the Muslim community, however, have questioned the scope of the administration’s action. According to mosque representatives, official notices and court proceedings related only to a room allegedly built without permission in 2023. They contend that sealing the entire mosque complex has prevented access to prayer spaces and exceeded the matter under dispute.
Community leaders have also claimed they were not given sufficient opportunity to address the issue through legal channels before the sealing was carried out.
Following the administration’s action, members of several Hindu organisations gathered near the site and performed a havan. Videos circulating on social media showed participants raising slogans, including “Masjid Swaha,” drawing criticism and concern from local Muslims. Many residents expressed fears that such actions could deepen mistrust and create a sense of insecurity within the community.
The incident comes amid a series of disputes involving mosques and religious structures in parts of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. While Hindu groups argue that they are seeking action against unauthorised constructions, Muslim leaders have accused authorities of acting under pressure from Hindutva organisations. They have indicated that further legal steps may be taken in response.
The developments have left the Thano area on edge, with residents calling for restraint and urging authorities to handle sensitive religious matters strictly according to legal procedures. Many believe a transparent and lawful approach is essential to maintaining peace and public confidence.
