Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has triggered fresh controversy after his victories in both Nandigram and Bhabanipur in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. His post result statements, which linked electoral support to religious identity, have drawn sharp reactions from political observers and opponents.

Addressing supporters after the results, Adhikari credited Hindu voters for his win in Nandigram. He alleged that Muslim voters had backed the Trinamool Congress and described them using a term that translates to “fanatical.” He added that his focus would remain on serving the Hindu community in the constituency.

Calling his success a “victory for Hindutva,” Adhikari suggested that the election reflected a clear ideological divide among voters. His comments have raised concerns about deepening communal narratives in the state’s politics.

In Bhabanipur, Adhikari secured a major win against TMC chief Mamata Banerjee by a margin of around 15,000 votes. He claimed that a large portion of votes from the CPI M had shifted in his favour, contributing to his victory.

The BJP leader also launched a strong attack on the ruling party, calling the Trinamool Congress corrupt and driven by family interests rather than ideology. He went as far as predicting the party’s collapse in the near future.

Adhikari reassured his supporters that the BJP would deliver on its promises, referring to commitments made by leaders such as Amit Shah and Narendra Modi during the campaign.

His statements have added to the already tense political climate in West Bengal, where the contest between the BJP and TMC has been highly competitive. Critics argue that such remarks risk widening social divisions, while supporters view them as a reflection of ground level realities.

As the state moves into the post election phase, attention will remain on how political parties respond to these challenges and address concerns over growing polarization.
