New Delhi: Starlink, the satellite internet company owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has said it is ready to provide high speed internet services in India, claiming that it has established the necessary infrastructure in the country with the required government approvals.

In a statement posted on social media platform X on Friday, the company said it had spent more than five years working with Indian regulators, industry stakeholders and telecom operators to prepare for its entry into the Indian market.

Starlink said it had developed dedicated ground systems, gateways and other infrastructure within India to ensure that internet traffic originating in the country is handled securely. The company added that the infrastructure had been established with the necessary government approvals.

The announcement comes amid growing debate over competition and regulatory clearances in India’s satellite communications sector.

Reliance welcomes competition

Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, recently said it welcomed competition in the satellite communications market, including from Starlink. However, the company stressed that all domestic and foreign operators must comply with Indian laws and regulations.

Reliance also said that a competitive market would allow customers to judge which company offers better services. It maintained that the same regulatory standards should apply to every operator seeking to do business in India.

The exchange followed criticism from Musk, who questioned whether established business interests were creating obstacles to Starlink’s entry into the Indian market.

Regulatory clearances remain crucial

Starlink’s statement comes as several companies prepare to offer satellite based internet services in India. These include Starlink, Reliance’s Jio satellite communications venture and Eutelsat OneWeb, which is backed by Bharti Enterprises.

Although these companies have obtained key satellite communications licences, they must meet additional regulatory and security requirements before beginning commercial operations.

The government has maintained that operators must comply with the country’s security framework and other applicable rules. The assignment of satellite spectrum and the fulfilment of required security conditions are among the important steps involved in launching services.

Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Mittal has also said that Eutelsat OneWeb is awaiting the necessary permissions to begin operations in India, despite having worked on its satellite network for several years.

Potential benefits for rural India

Satellite internet services could improve connectivity in remote villages, mountainous regions and other areas where conventional broadband infrastructure is difficult or expensive to establish.

Starlink’s planned entry could introduce another option for Indian consumers and businesses, while increasing competition among internet service providers.

However, the company will need to complete all applicable regulatory requirements before it can begin commercial services. The timing of its launch will depend on the necessary clearances and compliance with India’s satellite communications rules.
