Sonam Wangchuk Forcibly Hospitalised, Abhijeet Dipke Also Detained by Delhi Police

Climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk was forcibly shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police amid his ongoing hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. Meanwhile, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the youth movement Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), was also taken into police custody.

According to the police, the action was carried out following directions from the Delhi High Court and on the advice of medical experts due to Wangchuk’s deteriorating health condition after more than 20 days of fasting. However, protesters alleged that the police used force to suppress a peaceful movement instead of engaging in meaningful dialogue.

The protest leaders accused the government of attempting to silence democratic dissent and argued that using police action against peaceful demonstrators is deeply concerning in a democratic society.

The incident triggered strong political reactions across the country. Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav described the action as a direct attack on the Constitution and democratic principles, stating that the government has become intolerant of peaceful protests.

Senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot also criticised the Centre, saying that no serious effort had been made to hold talks with the protesters during the past several weeks and that the forcible hospitalization appeared to be an attempt to avoid growing public pressure.AAP leader Sanjay Singh, Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray also condemned the move, calling it an example of authoritarian governance and an erosion of democratic values.

Security arrangements at Jantar Mantar have been further tightened, with additional police personnel deployed in the area to prevent any escalation of protests.

Opposition parties have indicated that they will raise the issue both inside Parliament and through public demonstrations in the coming days.
