Power Crisis Deepens in Bhatkal as HESCOM Chairman Set to Visit
Frequent outages spark public anger amid delays in key infrastructure project

Bhatkal: Residents of Bhatkal and nearby areas are facing a worsening power crisis, with frequent and unannounced power cuts disrupting daily life. As temperatures rise, the irregular supply has added to public frustration, making conditions increasingly difficult for households and businesses alike.
Amid the growing concerns, it has been announced that HESCOM Chairman Syed Azeem Peer Qadri will visit Bhatkal on Tuesday. During his visit, he is expected to attend a program organized at the invitation of Majlis Islah wa Tanzeem, where local leaders are likely to raise the ongoing electricity issues.
The root of the problem is being linked to delays in the 110 KV substation project on Sagar Road. Although work on the substation began nearly two years ago, progress has stalled due to land disputes involving private properties and cases pending in the High Court. As a result, the transmission line required for the project remains incomplete.
Currently, the excessive load on the Heble grid has forced authorities to resort to power cuts, especially in rural areas. Officials have also pointed out that the main power lines from Sirsi and Kumta frequently develop faults, further affecting supply.
There is a proposal to install an alternative line from Byndoor to improve the situation. However, the project has been delayed due to pending approvals from the Forest Department.
Residents are now hopeful that the chairman’s visit will bring attention to these long-standing issues. They expect local representatives to push for concrete measures, including resolving hurdles in the 110 KV project, to restore a stable power supply and provide much-needed relief to the public.
